At least 19 people have been confirmed dead in Niger following an attack by terrorist sect, Boko Haram.

Many of the victims were burnt alive while others drowned in Lake Chad, a local legislator told AFP.

The attack occurred on Sunday, March 1, on three islands located on the Lake, according to ElHadj Aboubacar, a deputy from the town of Bosso in southeastern Niger.

“We have been informed that at least 19 people have died, most of whom were either burnt alive or drowned in the lake,” he told AFP.

Aboubacar added that most of those who drowned were women and children who tried to flee the attack.

Niger recently became a target for Boko Haram after it deployed troops to aid the fight against the sect.
