Maiduguri, Borno State, Nigeria – The Governor of Borno State, Babagana Umara Zulum, has approved the immediate recruitment of 473 medical personnel, including doctors, to strengthen healthcare services across the state.
Okay News reports that the Chief Medical Director of the Borno State Hospital Management Board, Abubakar Kullima, disclosed the development on Thursday in Maiduguri.
Kullima said the approval was aimed at improving healthcare service delivery and ensuring that residents have better access to quality medical care.
He explained that the recruitment covers a total of 473 health professionals, including medical doctors, nurses, pharmacists, laboratory scientists, and other critical health workers who will be deployed to some of the newly commissioned health centres.
According to him, the recruitment also includes technical and support staff such as primary eye care and perioperative care nurses, as well as community health extension workers.
The CMD noted that the exercise forms part of ongoing interventions by the Zulum administration to strengthen the health sector in the state.
He added that the governor had recently approved special training funds for resident doctors and commissioned new health facilities, including eye and dental hospitals, to expand access to specialised healthcare services.
The newly recruited personnel will be deployed to general hospitals and primary health centres across the three senatorial zones of the state.
Meanwhile, Governor Zulum has also directed the immediate implementation of a 100 per cent rural posting allowance for medical doctors and a 40 per cent allowance for nurses working in hard-to-reach areas.
The directive, contained in a memo to the Hospital Management Board, is aimed at attracting and retaining qualified medical personnel in rural communities across the state.
Under the new policy, the remuneration of doctors posted to rural areas will effectively double, taking into account the challenging working conditions and the urgent need for skilled medical staff outside the state capital.
