Operatives of the Borno State Police Command, a regional arm of the Nigeria Police Force responsible for law enforcement in Borno State, northeastern Nigeria, have uncovered a significant cache of military-grade ammunition in Maiduguri, the capital city of Borno State, a region that has faced prolonged security challenges linked to insurgency and armed violence.
The discovery was made in the Kumshe Jamba Mari area of Maiduguri, Borno State, following intelligence-driven operations carried out by police officers attached to the Lamisula Division. The recovered items consisted of 912 rounds of B32 Armor-Piercing Incendiary type (7.62 x 51 millimeter) ammunition, a caliber commonly associated with military-grade weapons.
Okay News reports that the operation was conducted on Saturday, 3 January 2026, at approximately 1400 hours, after security operatives received what authorities described as credible and actionable intelligence pointing to the concealment of dangerous weapons within the community.
In a statement issued on Sunday, 4 January 2026, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Borno State Police Command, Assistant Superintendent of Police Nahum Daso, confirmed that the ammunition was safely recovered and secured. He said the command acted swiftly to prevent the materials from falling into the hands of criminal or terrorist elements.
The statement read, “The Borno State Police Command, under the leadership of the Commissioner of Police, Naziru Abdulmajid, has recorded another significant operational breakthrough in its sustained efforts to enhance public safety and security across the state. On January 4, 2026, at about 1400hrs, the Divisional Police Officer Lamisula Division, acting on credible intelligence, led a team of police operatives to Kumshe Jamba Mari area, Maiduguri, where a hidden cache of ammunition was discovered.”
According to Daso, standard security protocols were immediately activated following the discovery. The Department of Explosive Ordnance Disposal, a specialized unit of the Nigeria Police Force trained in handling dangerous munitions, was promptly deployed to the location to ensure public safety.
He further stated, “The area was professionally cordoned off, and a total of 912 rounds of B32 API type (7.62 x 51mm) ammunition were safely recovered. The recovered exhibits have been secured, while investigations are ongoing to trace the source and intended use of the ammunition, as well as to apprehend those responsible.”
The Commissioner of Police, Naziru Abdulmajid, commended members of the public for their cooperation and timely intelligence, emphasizing that community support remains critical to sustaining security gains in Borno State.
Daso added, “He further urges residents to continue partnering with the Police by promptly reporting suspicious movements or activities within their communities.”
The latest recovery comes amid intensified counter-terrorism and anti-crime operations across Maiduguri. In a related development reported earlier, Nigerian Army troops under Operation Hadin Kai, the military operation tasked with combating insurgency in northeastern Nigeria, recently recovered 1,270 rounds of 12.7 millimeter ammunition warheads, live 12.7 millimeter rounds, and power banks concealed inside a drainage system in the Bulumkutu area of Maiduguri, Borno State.
Security analysts say the repeated discovery of hidden arms caches highlights both the persistent threats in the region and the increasing effectiveness of intelligence-led security operations.
