HOUSTON, United States — Brazil secured a dramatic 2-1 victory over Japan on Monday after Gabriel Martinelli struck deep into stoppage time to send the five-time world champions into the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Japan stunned Brazil by taking the lead in the 29th minute through Kaishu Sano, who capitalised on a defensive error before firing a low effort into the net. The Asian side maintained their advantage until halftime and frustrated Brazil for long periods with disciplined defending and swift counterattacks.
Brazil responded after the break and drew level in the 56th minute when Casemiro powered home a header from Gabriel Magalhães’ cross. Carlo Ancelotti’s side increased the pressure as the match progressed, with Vinícius Júnior coming close to putting Brazil ahead after a brilliant solo run that ended with his effort striking the post.
Just as the game appeared destined for extra time, Japan surrendered possession near their penalty area in the fifth minute of added time. Bruno Guimarães quickly fed Martinelli, who calmly controlled the ball and slotted a low finish beyond goalkeeper Zion Suzuki to complete Brazil’s comeback.
The victory sends Brazil into the last 16, where they will face either Norway or Ivory Coast. Japan, meanwhile, exit the tournament after a spirited display that pushed one of football’s traditional powerhouses to the brink.
