KWARA STATE, Nigeria: – 176 individuals abducted during an armed attack on the Woro and Nuku communities in Kwara State regained their freedom on Wednesday, August 5, 2026.
The Kwara State Government announced the release through a post on its official Facebook page at 5:01 p.m. WAT. Okay News reports that the state administration confirmed the safe return of the captives months after the initial assault.
The government statement acknowledged the involvement of Nigeria’s President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and security agencies in securing the release. The government said, “Alihamdulillaah and kudos to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR, security forces, and everyone who played a role in this huge feat. We are grateful!”
The victims were taken captive on February 3, 2026, when suspected Boko Haram extremists on motorcycles invaded the rural communities in the Kaiama Local Government Area. The assault lasted several hours and resulted in the deaths of more than 200 people.
Attackers destroyed homes and businesses during the invasion, causing residents to flee the region. Local vigilantes who engaged the attackers were trapped and burned inside their office facility.
The government did not release further details regarding the exact circumstances of the rescue operation.
