No fewer than five persons are feared dead in a gas explosion that occurred at a gas shop on Eliozu area of Port Harcourt.

Rivers state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ahmad Muhammad confirmed the explosion on phone but said he would wait until he was sure of the situation before commenting on casualty.

According to him, the Police went to the scene of the incident to collate information immediately they heard about it.

He relayed information at his disposal, saying gas vendors were refilling gas at the spot when the cylinder suddenly exploded.

He dismissed fears that the incident was a bomb explosion, promising that the Police would release a comprehensive statement on the situation at the end of its finding.

An eyewitness reveals that: “I am sure the number will be more than five because I saw some bodies on the ground when the explosion occurred. I was told it was a gas explosion. I hope this is true”.
