Akure, Ondo State, Nigeria — Three nurses abducted by gunmen at a primary health facility in Akure, the capital of Ondo State in southwestern Nigeria, have been rescued by operatives of the Ondo State Security Network Agency, popularly known as Amotekun.
The Corps Commander of the security outfit, Akogun Adetunji Adeleye, confirmed the development on Saturday, March 28, 2026, while speaking at the command headquarters. He said the health workers were freed at about 4:30 a.m. West African Time (WAT, GMT+1).
According to him, operatives also rescued a 45-year-old man and his 15-year-old son who had been abducted earlier in the Pelebe community along Oda Road in Akure.
He said, “The man and his son were kidnapped between 7:30 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. yesterday (Friday). The victims were, however, rescued by our men at about 1:00 a.m. after a heavy confrontation with the kidnappers.
“The three health workers earlier abducted have also been rescued at about 4:30 a.m. and are currently receiving treatment at the Amotekun health facility.”
Okay News reports that armed attackers had stormed the government-owned primary health centre located in the Oke Ijebu area of Akure at about 2:00 a.m. on Saturday. The gunmen reportedly abducted at least three nurses who were on duty at the time.
A patient at the facility said the attackers arrived in a bus and forcefully entered the premises. Some health workers managed to escape during the incident, while the abducted nurses were reportedly bundled into the vehicle and taken to an unknown destination.
The security commander assured residents that protecting lives and property remains a major priority for the Ondo State government. He also urged members of the public to share timely and credible information with security agencies to strengthen efforts aimed at improving safety across the state.
