President Muhammadu Buhari has named a former North American Bureau Chief of The Guardian, Laolu Akande, as a Senior Special Assistant to lead the media and communication unit in the office of Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, the News Agency of Nigeria has reported.

President Muhammadu Buhari has appointed Laolu Akande, a journalist resident in the US, as Senior Special Assistant of Media and Communication to Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo.

Akande, a former editor of Saturday Tribune, was appointed on Monday, June 22, 2015, according to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

Buhari is also expected to name other officials who will work in his administration this week.

Akande is also a pastor and a former North American Bureau Chief of The Guardian.

He reportedly moved to the US in 1997 due to harassment suffered under the administration of late dictator, Sani Abacha.

He also worked briefly at the United Nations as a press officer and later as advocacy consultant between 2002 and 2004.
