Court Remands Omoyele Sowore in Kuje Prison Over Cybercrime

ABUJA, Nigeria: The Federal High Court in Abuja remanded activist and African Action Congress presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore at the Kuje Correctional Centre on Monday, June 22, 2026.

Okay News reports that Trial Justice Mohammed Umar ordered the remand until Wednesday, when proceedings will resume on a two-count cybercrime charge filed by Nigeria’s Department of State Services for a social media post calling Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu a “criminal.”

The remand order followed the revocation of bail previously granted to the defendant. The presiding judge revoked the bail and issued a warrant of arrest against the defendant on June 16, 2026.

The arrest warrant was issued because the defendant failed to appear before the court to open his defence for the continuation of his trial. The defendant had previously opted to represent himself in court after his legal team withdrew from the case.

During the proceedings on Monday, the judge dismissed a motion seeking to disqualify him from conducting the trial over allegations of bias.
