A powerful earthquake measuring 7.7 magnitude has struck 80 km east of Pokhara in Nepal about half way between the town and the capital Kathmandu, the US Geological Survey says.

Witnesses said some buildings in Kathmandu had collapsed following Saturday’s tremors.
There was no immediate word on casualties.

Tremors were felt as far away as New Delhi and other northern cities in India, witnesses said.
