A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital city, has granted bail to a former top government official and members of his immediate family following proceedings held on Wednesday, 7 January 2026.

Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court of Nigeria approved bail in the sum of ₦500 million each for Abubakar Malami, Nigeria’s former Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, alongside his wife and son.

The court imposed strict conditions attached to the bail approval. According to the presiding judge, each defendant must provide credible sureties who own landed property in Asokoro, Maitama, or Gwarinpa, three high value residential districts within Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory of Nigeria.

Justice Nwite further directed that all property documents submitted by the sureties must undergo verification by the Deputy Chief Registrar of the Federal High Court. In addition, the sureties are required to swear to an affidavit of means, affirming their financial capacity to meet the bail conditions.

Okay News reports that the court also ordered Abubakar Malami to surrender all his travel documents to the court registry. The former justice minister is prohibited from leaving Nigeria unless he receives formal approval from the court.

Similarly, the judge ruled that the other defendants must also deposit their international travel documents with the court as part of measures to ensure their availability for future hearings.

The case remains ongoing, with further judicial proceedings expected in the coming days as legal processes continue.
