ABUJA, Nigeria — The House of Representatives descended into a rowdy session at 2:01 pm WAT on Wednesday, July 8, 2026, as lawmakers clashed over a motion seeking to summon Nigeria’s President, Bola Tinubu, to explain the alleged non-funding of constituency projects.
Okay News reports that Nigeria’s House of Representatives member Alex Mascot Ikwechegh of the Labour Party representing Abia State moved the motion calling on the president to appear before the chamber over persistent delays in funding constituency projects across the country.
Another lawmaker seconded the motion, while an additional proposal was made to amend the motion to suspend plenary activities for one week until the issue is resolved.
Nigeria’s House of Representatives member Yusuf Gagdi of the All Progressives Congress representing Plateau State opposed the motion and the proposed plenary suspension. Gagdi stated that there was no basis for summoning the president because the implementation and funding of constituency projects fall within the responsibilities of the relevant ministries, departments, and agencies.
The disagreement led to shouting matches and disorder on the floor of the chamber. Speaker of Nigeria’s House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas intervened during the session and directed the lawmakers to vote on the matter to determine the position of the house.
