President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has officially announced the passing of his predecessor, former President Muhammadu Buhari. According to the statement released today, President Buhari died in London at approximately 4:30 p.m. after a prolonged illness.
President Tinubu has personally spoken with Mrs. Aisha Buhari, the former First Lady, extending his deepest condolences to her and the Buhari family.
In a move to honor the late leader, President Tinubu has directed Vice President Kashim Shettima to travel to the United Kingdom to accompany President Buhari’s body back to Nigeria.
Muhammadu Buhari served as Nigeria’s President for two terms, having been elected in 2015 and re-elected in 2019. He also held the position of military head of state from January 1984 to August 1985.
As a mark of respect, President Tinubu has ordered that flags be flown at half-mast nationwide in honor of the departed statesman.
