The Rivers State House of Assembly has officially initiated a process to remove the state Governor and Deputy Governor following allegations of gross misconduct.
Led by the House Leader, Major Jack, and Deputy Leader, Linda Stewart, 26 lawmakers presented formal notices citing various constitutional breaches under Section 188 of the 1999 Constitution. The legislators claim that the state’s leadership has shown an inability to perform its fundamental duties.
The primary allegations against the executive include the failure to present a formal budget and the unauthorized spending of state funds without legislative oversight.
Okay News reports that the governor and his deputy are also accused of withholding salaries and operational funds from the House of Assembly and its Service Commission.
Further charges include the demolition of the assembly complex and making government appointments without following the proper screening procedures.
The Speaker of the House has confirmed that both the Governor and the Deputy Governor will be served with the formal notices within seven days, as mandated by law. This development marks a significant escalation in the ongoing political friction within the state.
The lawmakers insist that these actions are necessary to protect the constitutional integrity of the legislative arm and the financial health of the state.
