Professor Mahmood Yakubu, the outgoing Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has officially handed over the leadership of the electoral body to Mrs. May Agbamuche as the Acting National Chairman.
Yakubu made this announcement on Tuesday during an ongoing meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners at the INEC headquarters in Abuja.
According to him, the decision followed the expiration of his tenure, and the leadership transition will ensure that the commission continues to operate smoothly. He appealed to all Resident Electoral Commissioners and directors of the commission to give full cooperation and support to Agbamuche as she assumes her new role.
Mrs. May Agbamuche is currently the oldest serving National Commissioner in INEC. Her appointment as Acting Chairman will remain in effect pending the appointment of a substantive chairman by the appropriate authorities.
The handover marks another phase in the leadership structure of the nation’s electoral body, which is responsible for conducting free and fair elections across Nigeria.
Okay News reports that the handover ceremony was conducted in the presence of top INEC officials and senior directors who pledged their support to the acting chairman.
More updates on this development are expected as the commission prepares for upcoming electoral activities.
