Former Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has been appointed as manager of Scottish champions Celtic after agreeing a 12-month rolling contract with the Glasgow club.

Rodgers has been out of work since leaving Liverpool in October and had previously been linked with a return to Swansea before Francesco Guidolin took over at the Liberty Stadium.

“I am absolutely delighted to be named Celtic manager,” Rodgers told Celtic’s official website. “I will give my new role everything I have and do all I can to bring our supporters exciting, entertaining and winning football.”

“We wanted to bring one of the biggest and best names to the Club to match our own aspirations and those of our supporters — we believe, in appointing Brendan, that we have done this,” said Celtic chief executive Peter Lawwell.

Sources had previously reported that Rodgers was one of many names on the club’s managerial shortlist, with the likes of former Everton and Manchester United boss David Moyes, ex-Cardiff chief Malky Mackay and current Republic of Ireland assistant manager Roy Keane also contenders.

Celtic have been looking for a new manager since April when Deila, who won the Scottish Premiership title in each of his two seasons in charge, announced he would leave the club at the end of the 2015-16 campaign.
