LONDON, United Kingdom — Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has been named the Premier League Player of the Season following an outstanding individual campaign for the Red Devils.
Fernandes secured the award after helping Manchester United qualify for next season’s UEFA Champions League, finishing the league campaign with eight goals and 20 assists.
Okay News reports that the Portuguese midfielder matched the Premier League single-season assist record previously achieved by Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne.
The 31-year-old became the first Manchester United player to win the award since Nemanja Vidic in 2011 and the seventh player from the club to claim the honour.
Fernandes beat several high-profile nominees to the prize, including Arsenal trio David Raya, Gabriel Magalhaes and Declan Rice, as well as Manchester City striker Erling Haaland, Bournemouth forward Antoine Semenyo, Nottingham Forest midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White and Brentford striker Igor Thiago.
Meanwhile, Manchester City youngster Nico O’Reilly was named the Premier League Young Player of the Season after an impressive breakthrough campaign under manager Pep Guardiola.
The 21-year-old academy graduate made 34 senior appearances across multiple positions, including midfield and left-back roles.
O’Reilly finished ahead of fellow nominees Rayan Cherki, Eli Junior Kroupi, Mateus Fernandes, Lewis Hall, Michael Kayode, Kobbie Mainoo and Alex Scott to clinch the award.
