CAF Consider 24-team Africa Cup Of Nations

The Confederation of African Football (Caf) have begun a two-day symposium in Morocco with the format and timing of the Africa Cup of Nations up for discussion.

Many European clubs where Africans play had long expressed anger over the timing of the continent’s biggest tournament, the Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon).

The tournament takes place in January and February, once in two years.

Also, the biennial finals could be boosted from 16 teams to 24.

“That is the first thing to talk about – we can’t get away from it,” said Caf president Ahmad.

”We are here for a historic chapter and to effect great changes. These are decisions that will determine the future of our game

“We have already had a lot of suggestions,” he added in his opening speech on Tuesday.

In the buildup to the last tournament in Gabon, a high number of players turned down call-ups to stay with their clubs, for fear of losing their places.

This included seven Cameroonians who refused to turn out for the team that eventually won the title.

A move to a tournament in June and July is also set to be discussed in the Moroccan capital Rabat.

The body would also deliberate on the possibility of staging the tournament every four, rather than two, years.
