The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has officially introduced the African Nations League, a new yearly competition aimed at providing regular, high-quality matches for senior national teams across the continent. The initiative is designed to give Africa’s best players a consistent platform to compete and gain greater international exposure.
CAF President Patrice Motsepe announced that the tournament will be staged every year, marking a shift toward more structured and frequent elite-level football for national teams. According to CAF, the league will help address long gaps between major competitions by ensuring continuous competitive action, while also raising the overall standard of play across African football.
The governing body said the African Nations League is part of a broader strategy to strengthen talent development, boost fan engagement, and improve the global profile of African football.
The launch comes amid wider reforms by CAF, including plans to move the Africa Cup of Nations to a four-year cycle after 2028, as the organisation seeks to reshape the continent’s football calendar for long-term growth.
