Caroline Wozniacki Defeats Venus Williams to Win WTA Finals

By Farouk Mohammed

Former world number one Caroline Wozniacki defeated Venus Williams 6-4, 6-4 to win the biggest title of her career at the WTA Finals on Sunday.

The Dane, currently ranked sixth, broke Williams’ serve six times to seal victory in just under 90 minutes, throwing her racquet into the air in celebration as she secured the final point.

Wozniacki had never beaten Williams in seven previous meetings. Her win on Sunday prevented the 37-year-old, the tournament’s oldest-ever finalist, from regaining the trophy after a gap of nine years.

Wozniacki has been in brilliant, aggressive form in Singapore, beating Elina Svitolina and Simona Halep at the group stage and Karolina Pliskova in the semi-finals.

It was only the 27-year-old’s second trophy this season after she won last month’s Pan-Pacific Open in Tokyo.
