Newcastle United and Chelsea played out an entertaining 2–2 draw in Saturday’s Premier League clash at St James’ Park, with the visitors recovering from a two-goal first-half deficit to earn a point.

Newcastle raced into a lead in the opening half, thanks to a brilliant brace from Nick Woltemade. The German striker opened the scoring early on in the 4th minute, reacting quickest to finish from close range after a saved effort fell kindly, and then doubled his tally in the 20th minute with a composed finish from a pinpoint cross.

Chelsea looked flat going into the break, but their fortunes changed after halftime as they mounted a strong response. Just four minutes into the second half (49’), Reece James curled a stunning free-kick into the top corner to halve the deficit and spark the comeback. The equaliser arrived midway through the second period when João Pedro capitalised on a long ball from goalkeeper Robert Sánchez, controlled well, and finished coolly past the advancing keeper in the 66th minute to make it 2–2.

Both sides had chances to snatch all three points in a tense finale.

Newcastle appealed for a late penalty when Reece James was judged to have pulled back Harvey Barnes just outside the box, but after a VAR check no spot-kick was awarded.

Chelsea also came close on a couple of occasions, with substitute Anthony Elanga missing a promising opening for the hosts.

The draw leaves both teams with plenty to consider as they head into the festive fixtures — Newcastle relinquishing a strong early lead, and Chelsea taking heart from a resilient fightback on the road.
