The Portuguese insists the competition between the top sides in the Premier League means his side cannot just look towards defending their title next year

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has insisted his first target for next season is to qualify for the Champions League rather than win the Premier League title.

The Blues ran away with the league this season, securing the crown with three matches to spare.

But Mourinho believes the intensity of the competition towards the top of the table means his side must make sure they finish in the top four before they start thinking about titles.

“Next season it will be the same five [at the top],” he told talkSPORT. “I don’t know what Tottenham will do this summer, but for sure, among these five teams anyone can be champions, and anyone can finish fifth.

“When the season starts I have to make sure we finish top four. That’s the first step, because one of us is going to be out of the Champions League.

“Last year it was Manchester United, this season’s it’s Liverpool. Next season we have to make sure it’s not Chelsea.”
