ABUJA, Nigeria — A civil society coalition called upon Nigeria’s electoral regulatory body on Sunday, May 3, 2026, to investigate official records listing a lawyer as the National Legal Adviser for two distinct political parties simultaneously.
Okay News reports that the Nigeria Democratic Rights Advocacy (NDRA) released a statement identifying Reuben Egwuaba as holding executive roles in both the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) and the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).
The statement, signed by NDRA General-Secretary Julius Aondowase, cited the revised Electoral Act, which prohibits individuals from maintaining membership in more than one political party. The coalition stated the dual registration carries a potential penalty of a ₦10 million ($6,667 USD) fine or a prison sentence of up to two years.
“This situation demands urgent clarification from all parties involved,” the group said. “If these records are accurate, then this is a clear violation of the law.”
Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) responded to the allegations by clarifying that the lawyer is currently only affiliated with the NDC. Wilfred Ifogah, the Deputy Director of Voter Education and Publicity at INEC, stated that the individual resigned from the APM prior to the coalition’s statement.
“My inquiry revealed that he has already resigned from APM, which means he is of NDC,” Ifogah said. “It’s likely APM has not formally communicated the commission. However, the needful will be done to update the portal.”
