Former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, has dismissed claims by Works Minister, Dave Umahi, that he is inciting the people of the South-East against the Federal Government over the Lagos-Calabar coastal road project.

Obi, who was the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, described the claims as “baseless distractions” and maintained that his administration’s efforts to improve infrastructure while minimizing adverse impacts on communities were strategic.

The controversy surrounding the Lagos-Calabar coastal road project has been ongoing, with many Nigerians criticizing the timing and potential impact on citizens’ livelihoods. The Federal Government has defended the project, saying it will provide jobs and stimulate economic growth.

However, Obi and others have described the project as a misplaced priority and a potential source of hardship for affected citizens. The project, which is estimated to cost N15 trillion, has already begun with the demolition of buildings on the right of way, sparking intense criticism from many Nigerians.

In a statement, Obi clarified that during his governorship, he made it clear that structures obstructing existing roads and lacking approval would be removed, and he only initiated removal when construction had already commenced.

He challenged anyone to verify and show him where the demolished structures on existing roads or ongoing businesses were not encroaching on the road and built without government approval while he served as governor.
