Construction work has resumed on the Second Niger Bridge situated between Asaba in Delta state and Onitsha in Anambra state.

The bridge serves as a major connector between the South East and the South West.

It was gathered that the major contractor, Julius Berger, has returned to site.

According to an engineer on the site, the project restarted in October and is expected to last five years.

“We are back to the site fully and as you can see work has started and by the grace of God, we will not stop until we finish the job,” the engineer told Sun News.

“I’m happy that the government has played its part and I pray it will keep to its promise and sustain it so that the job will continue until we finish it.

“I don’t think anything will stop the job again because water level has reduced, so we can comfortably work without any hindrance.”

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo had in October during his visit to Anambra State revealed that the Federal Government had approved $2b for the project.

The first Niger Bridge was commissioned in 1966 while work on the second bridge commenced in the 70s.
