Davido’s 2013 hit song ‘Skelewu’ finally made a debut on one of the biggest movie platforms ever: Disney.
The news was shared yesterday by the excited singer who revealed that the smash hit single was one of the featured songs in Queen of Katwe, the new movie notably featuring Oscar Award-winning actress, Lupita Nyong’o and Nigerian David Oyelowo.
Queen of Katwe tells the story of a Ugandan chess champion, Phiona Mutesi, who discovered chess when she was nine years old scavenging for food in the Katwe slum districts of Kampala. She later becomes a Woman Candidate Master after her performances at World Chess Olympiads.
The film is produced by Walt Disney Pictures and ESPN Films, and set for a limited release in North America on September 23, 2016, followed by a general theatrical release on September 30.
Queen of Katwe was screened at the 2016 Toronto International Film Festival. The film garnered praise for its non-Caucasian cast, setting, and subject matter; elements regarded as rare for a major American studio.
