ASABA, Nigeria – The Delta State Police Command has arrested social media personality Ifeanyi Ogbonna, popularly known as “Odogwu of Asaba”, over an alleged rape involving a 20-year-old woman who later died after reportedly ingesting a poisonous substance.
Okay News reports that the arrest followed a petition received by the police alleging that the woman travelled to Asaba on June 1, 2026, after Ogbonna allegedly invited her for a content creation training programme promoted on his social media platforms.
According to the Delta State Police spokesperson, SP Bright Edafe, the suspect allegedly took the woman to a hotel after she arrived in Asaba, where she was reportedly raped and assaulted.
Police said the woman returned home in distress and told her parents about the alleged incident. She also reportedly recorded a video describing her ordeal and the emotional trauma she experienced afterwards.
The victim later ingested a toxic substance in what investigators described as an apparent suicide attempt. Although she was taken for medical treatment, she eventually died.
The case has sparked public outrage and renewed calls for justice for the deceased, with Nigerians demanding a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the alleged sexual violence and her subsequent death.
Following the petition, Delta State Commissioner of Police CP Yemi Oyeniyi directed the Area Command in Effurun to immediately investigate the allegations. The police have not disclosed the outcome of the investigation or any charges filed against Ogbonna.
