Dino Melaye, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in Kogi, has accused Governor Yahaya Bello of seeking an unconstitutional third term in office through a proxy.

Melaye made these claims during an appearance on Politics Today, a programme on Channels Television, on Monday night.

Yahaya Bello, who has completed two terms in office, is purportedly supporting Ahmed Ododo, the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate, to maintain influence in the state.

Melaye alleges that Bello’s support for Ododo is a calculated move to extend his tenure in office indirectly, using Ododo as a pawn.

“Ododo is physically on the ballot but Yahaya Bello is the one seeking a third term through a proxy,” Melaye asserted.

During the interview, Melaye emphasized that he would rather focus on promoting his political party and highlighting the plans his team has for the people of Kogi state, rather than turning the debate into a discussion solely about Governor Bello.

“I will not want this debate to be about Yahaya Bello,” Melaye said. “Rather, I would like to market my political party and market what we have for the people of Kogi state.”

Expressing confidence in his prospects in the upcoming gubernatorial election, Melaye emphasized that Kogi, with its abundant resources, has no justification for its current state of underdevelopment.

The gubernatorial election is scheduled to take place on November 11 in the state.
