Disney Signs TikTok Deal to Let Creators Use Movie Clips in Videos

Published

BURBANK, United StatesDisney and TikTok have reached a new agreement allowing creators to legally use clips from Disney films and television content in their videos, covering popular franchises including Star Wars, Toy Story, and the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Okay News reports that the partnership will first launch in the United States before expanding to other markets. Videos created under the arrangement will also be featured on Verts, Disney’s recently launched short-form video platform.

The companies did not disclose the financial terms of the agreement. The announcement comes months after Disney abandoned a reported $1 billion deal with OpenAI that would have allowed users to generate AI videos using Disney-owned characters after the AI firm discontinued its Sora video tool.

Disney Chief Marketing and Brand Officer Asad Ayaz said audiences are finding new ways to celebrate the company’s stories, while social media analyst Matt Navarra described the move as a major shift in entertainment marketing, giving fans official access to content that can help promote Disney’s brands across social media.

According to TikTok, its platform recorded an average of 6.5 million film- and television-related posts every day last year. The new arrangement is expected to reduce copyright disputes over fan-made videos while providing selected creators with promotional support and access to exclusive Disney events as the company expands Verts beyond the U.S.
