It was gathered that the armed men tied white band on their heads when they stormed at about 9.00 pm on the fateful day.

The incident took all by surprise as they beat  the armed policemen at the gate before gaining entrance into the station from where they made straight to the counter where the DPO was seen standing  and attending to official matter.

Reports had it that the assailants who were armed with axes and machetes, immediately axed the DPO on his shoulder and hand which made him to collapse.

Four other policemen were also said to have been axed, which caused them to bleed profusely.

The DPO is currently placed on danger list at Iyienu Mission hospital Ogidi where he was rushed to when he collapsed.

Luck however ran out on one of the assailants as he was shot on the leg when they were escaping and arrested by the police.

In a confessional statement he said they were members of the newly formed members of the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra, MASSOB, from Asaba, Delta State capital, and that they came to look for arms in the police armoury.

Reacting to the incident, the former provost of Nigeria Bar Association (NBA), Barrister Pat Agbata, said that the attack was barbaric and a deliberate act to harm the innocent DPO and his men by men of the underworld and called for thorough investigation.

Also reacting, Prince Uche Amobi, who is the General Overseer of temple of God mission, said that police should beef up security at the station to avoid future occurrence and sympathised with the DPO and others for the injury they sustained on the hands of the hoodlums.

The DPO, on his sick bed at Iyienu Mission hospital Ogidi, yesterday.
