Osogbo, Osun State, Nigeria — A commuter whose identity has not yet been confirmed was shot dead on Sunday, March 15, 2026, after suspected operatives of the Nigeria Customs Service opened fire on his vehicle along the Osogbo–Iwo Road in southwestern Nigeria.
The incident reportedly occurred around 10:00 a.m. West African Time (WAT, GMT+1) in the Onibueja area of Ido-Osun, a community located near Osogbo, the capital city of Osun State in southwestern Nigeria.
Witnesses said the victim was driving from the Iwo end of the road toward Osogbo when security personnel believed to be pursuing him began shooting at his car. According to footage recorded at the scene and circulated locally, the vehicle was heavily damaged by bullets, while residents gathered around the location shortly after the shooting.
Okay News reports that the incident happened close to a police checkpoint, raising questions among residents about the circumstances that led to the shooting and the identity of the officers involved.
A resident of the Onibueja community who identified himself only as Sunday, citing security concerns, said the shooting drew many people to the area as news spread.
“The man was driving towards the Osogbo end from the Iwo end of the road when some security operatives in mufti shot at his vehicle.
“He died right there behind the wheel. The car was riddled with bullets, and people rushed to the scene. The incident happened close to a police roadblock.
“But those who killed him were not wearing uniforms, so we cannot really say who they are. People were very angry over the development,” Sunday said.
Residents who arrived at the scene were seen expressing anger and calling for a full investigation into the incident.
Authorities later confirmed that operatives of the Nigeria Customs Service, the federal government agency responsible for border control and customs enforcement in Nigeria, were suspected to have fired the shots.
The Police Public Relations Officer of the Osun State Command of the Nigeria Police Force, Abiodun Ojelabi, confirmed the shooting when contacted by reporters.
“The incident happened, but those who allegedly fired the shots are Customs operatives.
“We have arrested two people in connection with the incident. I will brief the press fully in a few minutes,” Ojelabi said.
At the time of reporting, officials had not released the identity of the deceased driver or explained the circumstances that led to the pursuit and shooting.
The Nigeria Police Force said further details would be provided after a preliminary investigation, while residents in the area have continued to demand transparency and accountability regarding the fatal incident.
