ABUJA, Nigeria — The Department of State Services (DSS) says it has launched an investigation into the conduct of its operatives following an incident that occurred during the remand of activist and politician Omoyele Sowore at a Federal High Court in Abuja.
Okay News reports that the DSS, in a statement issued on Tuesday, said its Director-General ordered an immediate probe after concerns emerged over a confrontation involving Sowore, a correctional official and security operatives during his transfer to Kuje Correctional Centre.
The agency said it was particularly concerned about video footage circulating online showing an altercation at the court premises. However, it maintained that Sowore’s remand was the result of court proceedings and not an action initiated by the DSS.
According to the Service, the case originated from social media posts made by Sowore in August 2025 concerning President Bola Tinubu. The DSS said it initially sought a retraction before filing charges under the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Amendment Act, 2024, for judicial interpretation of the matter.
The agency noted that Sowore was granted bail on self-recognition at the commencement of the trial, a decision it said was not opposed by the DSS. It added that the circumstances leading to the revocation of his bail and subsequent remand were determined by the court.
The DSS also cited previous instances where it pursued legal remedies instead of arrests, including cases involving media organisations and civil society groups, arguing that the agency remains committed to resolving disputes through lawful and constitutional means.
While assuring the public of professionalism and adherence to the rule of law, the Service said it would continue to prioritise civility in its operations and would review the conduct of any personnel found to have acted improperly during the incident.
