The All Progressives Congress has not mentioned what punishment it plans to mete out to its lawmakers who went against its position in the national assembly polls. It however said that whatever it decides to do in punishing senate president Bukola Saraki, house speaker, Yakubu Dogara, and other APC lawmakers, will follow due process.
This was disclosed by the national publicity Secretary of the party, Lai Mohammed, after a meeting of the party’s NWC.
Saraki and Dogara had gone against the party’s position following a mock election and subsequent directive that Sen. Ahmed Lawan and Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila be the two APC candidates for the national assembly top two positions.
The insistence of Saraki and Dogara to run in the election split the APC and the consequence in the senate was that a PDP lawmaker, Ike Ekweremadu, emerged as deputy senate president.
The APC spokesman, Lai Mohammed, who spoke with journalists insisted that the party had not made a U-turn on its earlier position that the errant lawmakers would be sanctioned. He however said the sanctions will follow “due proceas”.
According to him, the errant lawmakers would be notified about their alleged offences and given an opportunity to respond.
The meeting yesterday had the Pro-Lawan lawmakers in attendance. Mohammed said they came to confer with the party’s leadership on what happened at the National Assembly.
On the threat of the senators to contest Saraki’s victory in court, Mohammed said: “I think the party made its expression clear on the matter, that it is unhappy with the outcome of the election and I think we won’t say anything beyond that.
“What the senators will do is within their capability and rights.”
