Edo Government Accuses Shaibu of Masterminding Attack on Okpebholo’s Convoy

By Adamu Abubakar Isa

The Edo State Government has alleged that Philip Shaibu, the reinstated deputy governor, orchestrated the attack on the convoy of Senator Monday Okpebholo, the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate, which resulted in the death of a police officer. The attack occurred on Thursday along the airport road in Benin City.

According to the Commissioner for Communication and Orientation, Chris Nehikhare, Shaibu disregarded warnings from the Commissioner of Police and exited the airport with a crowd of thugs, leading to sporadic shooting, property destruction, injuries, and the loss of a policeman’s life.

The government has filed a notice of appeal and stay of execution on the Federal High Court judgment that reinstated Shaibu, citing its right to do so. The accusation comes amidst a political tussle between Shaibu and Governor Godwin Obaseki, with Shaibu seeking to contest the Edo Governorship election.
