The Nigerian government has expressed concerns about the safety of students and university property ahead of a planned nationwide protest scheduled for August 1-10, 2024. In a statement issued by the National Universities Commission (NUC) on Monday, the Education Minister, Prof. Tahir Mamman, advised students to remain on campus to avoid potential dangers.

The planned protest, which has gained traction on social media under the hashtag ‘#EndBadGovernance’, aims to address issues of bad governance, hardship, and hunger. However, the presidency and police authorities have called on youths to shelve the protest, citing concerns about safety and potential anarchy.

The NUC statement, signed by acting Executive Secretary Chris Maiyaki, directed Vice-Chancellors of universities to take proactive measures to ensure the security and safety of staff and students. The statement also urged Vice-Chancellors to issue specific statements assuring students of their safety.

The government’s concerns come as the protest gains momentum, with many Nigerians expressing frustration over the country’s economic and political situation. However, the government has urged citizens to resolve their grievances through the ballot box rather than protests.
