Abuja, Nigeria – The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has busted an alleged ‘Yahoo academy’ in Abuja, arresting 31 suspected internet fraudsters, including two alleged ringleaders and several trainees who were receiving training in cyber fraud.
Okay News reports that the operation was carried out on Thursday, April 9, 2026. The commission recovered mobile phones, 18 laptops, and other electronic gadgets during the raid. According to the EFCC, some of the trainees were reportedly lured from Benue State under false pretences, promised job offers, but were instead handed communication devices and software for cyber fraud training.
The recruits were confined within the facility with strict movement restrictions, and their phones were seized to prevent communication with the outside world. Erring trainees were subjected to physical punishment. The suspects will be charged in court upon conclusion of investigations.
Internet fraud, commonly referred to as ‘Yahoo Yahoo’ in Nigeria, involves using digital platforms to deceive victims through phishing emails, fake identities, romance scams, or fraudulent investment schemes. The EFCC has previously blamed such activities for stricter visa conditions imposed on Nigerians by foreign countries due to reputational damage.
This internet fraud bust adds to a string of crackdowns by the EFCC targeting cybercrime networks across Nigeria.
