The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has refuted claims circulating in the media regarding a purported list of 58 former governors under investigation for alleged corruption.

Reports emerged on Saturday suggesting that the anti-graft agency was probing 58 ex-governors accused of misappropriating N2.187 trillion over a span of 25 years.

However, in a statement issued on Sunday, EFCC’s spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, dismissed the reports as false and misleading.

Describing the alleged list as a “disingenuous fabrication,” Oyewale emphasized that the EFCC had not released any such list nor engaged in discussions with the media regarding investigations into former governors.

“The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, feels obliged to dissociate itself from a phantom report circulating in sections of the media claiming it has released a full list of ex-governors being investigated for alleged corruption,” the statement clarified.

He further urged the public to disregard the purported list, emphasizing that it was entirely false and aimed at achieving motives known only to its authors.

The EFCC reiterated the importance of accuracy in reporting and urged media practitioners to verify information directly with the Commission to avoid disseminating false or misleading reports.
