Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State has imposed a seven-day curfew in Igbara-Odo after two persons were killed in a clash allegedly caused by the students union in the community.

Violence reportedly erupted when the aggrieved students started distributing pamphlets to members of the community, demanding their monarch, Oba Edward Jaiyeola, be probed over the disbursement of funds in the last anniversary celebration.

It is understood that they also demanded the inclusion of four of their members in the monarch’s council of chiefs, that a new generation bank be kept in the town and for the police college promised them to be built.

Upon distributing the pamphlets, the irate youths stormed the Oba’s palace to unleash carnage, which resulted in the deaths of their yet-to-be identified leader and a policeman whose rifle was taken away.

“They vandalised all vehicles in sight there, the palace building and in the process, attacked the Divisional Police Officer of the town,” said a witness who spoke to Punch.

Governor Fayose arrived at the community for a meeting with the elders around 6pm in company of the state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Ibrahim Chafe, and other security operatives.

The governor immediately declared a seven-day curfew from 7am to 6pm daily on the community, vowing to get to the root of the crisis and ensure that perpetrators are brought to book.

“This is a very bad development. It is a big shame on the community. I am assuring you that we will get to the root of this matter and ensure that perpetrators are dealt with,” he said.
