Candidate background
Public record & biography
Donald Duke is a lawyer and former governor of Cross River State, which he led from 1999 to 2007. He earned a Master of Laws degree at the University of Pennsylvania in 1984. A profile published by the university describes his work as governor as concentrating on investment, business and tourism.
His administration established the Carnival Calabar, which developed from a carnival float in 2004 into a competition between five bands in 2005, according to Cross River’s Ministry of Information. He also initiated the Tinapa business and leisure resort; its first phase opened in April 2007. These projects formed part of his administration’s efforts to develop tourism and commercial activity in the state.
After leaving office, Duke continued his involvement in education and investment projects. In April 2014 he established the Donald Duke LLM Scholarship Fund at Penn Law, reserved for African students. The university’s account links the scholarship to his interest in legal education and the development of professional skills in Africa.
