Sowore Omoyele

Omoyele Sowore is a Nigerian human-rights and pro-democracy activist, writer and founder of the New York-based news organisation Sahara Reporters. Born on 16 February 1971, he comes from Ondo State. The Green Institute’s speaker biography records his study of geography and planning at the University of Lagos and a master’s degree in public administration at Columbia University.

His work has extended across journalism, teaching and political organising. The School of Visual Arts in New York listed him as the instructor for its Postcolonial Africa course in the 2017–2018 academic year. The course examined African history and culture from the late nineteenth century, including the experiences of East, West and Southern Africa.

Sowore contested Nigeria’s 2019 presidential election as the African Action Congress candidate. The Green Institute also identifies him as the initiator of the RevolutionNow protest movement, connecting his electoral activity with his longer record of public advocacy.
