Candidate background

Bola Ahmed Tinubu became President of Nigeria on 29 May 2023, after a career in accounting, the Senate and state government. Chicago State University confirms that he attended the university and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in 1979. His official State House biography records that he worked at Mobil Oil Producing Nigeria, where he rose to the position of treasurer.
Tinubu represented Lagos West in the Senate under the Social Democratic Party during the Third Republic. In a published recollection of his service beginning in 1992, he described joining senators who reconvened in Lagos after the annulment of the June 1993 presidential election and opposed continued military rule. His account says the action led to several weeks in police detention.
He subsequently spent time in exile. In a June 2026 address, Tinubu recalled campaigning for a return to democracy from abroad and returning to Nigeria to participate in the transition led by General Abdulsalami Abubakar.
Tinubu was elected governor of Lagos State in 1999 on the Alliance for Democracy platform and served until 2007. Before becoming president, he was a national leader of the All Progressives Congress. These earlier party affiliations and public offices form part of his political history.

The State House biography records a government target of a $1 trillion GDP by 2030. This is an administration target, not a separately verified 2027 manifesto pledge.
