Elephant Attack Leaves One Dead and One Missing in Oyo State

OYO STATE, NIGERIA: One person died and another is missing following an attack by a wild elephant in Innayin Community, Oyo State, Nigeria, on Thursday, April 23, 2026, at approximately 3:30 pm WAT.

Okay News reports that the Oyo State Police Command spokesperson, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, confirmed the incident in a statement issued after police operatives, local vigilantes, and hunters responded to a distress call from the community.

Authorities discovered the body of Ibrahim Tijani, aged 45, in a bush near the scene with injuries consistent with an animal attack. His remains were evacuated to the General Hospital, Iwere-Ile, for examination and preservation.

During search operations, Alhaji Muhammadu Bingin, aged 50, was reported missing after an encounter with the animal. Intensive search efforts involving local hunters and security personnel are currently underway to locate him.

The Commissioner of Police in Oyo State, Abimbola Olugbenga, stated that the command is working with stakeholders to secure the area. The police have engaged the National Park Service Nigeria to provide guidance on managing the situation.

Residents have been advised to remain calm, avoid the affected area, and report any sightings of the animal to security agencies.
