The 31-year-old scored a late equalizer in the draw against Stoke City to record 250 goals for the Red Devils which took him past Sir Bobby Charlton who has 249.

“It means a hell of a lot. It is a great honour and I am very proud,” Rooney told reporters. “It is difficult at the minute to be over-pleased because of the result but in the grand scheme it is huge honour. It is not something I expected when I joined. As I said before, I am proud and I hope there is more to come.

“The players who have played for this club have been world class. I am proud to play for this club. To be all-time goalscorer is a huge honour.”

The man he surpassed, Charlton was the first to congratulate him after the game.

He said: “I’d be lying to say I’m not disappointed to lose the record. However, I can honestly say I’m delighted for Wayne. ” #ROONEY250
“He’s a true great for club and country. It’s fitting he is now the highest goalscorer for both United and England.”

Former manager Alex Ferguson added: “Wayne thoroughly deserves his place in the history books and I’m sure he’ll go on to score many more goals.” #ROONEY250.
