ENUGU, Nigeria – The Enugu State Government has urged residents to take precautionary measures against possible flooding as rainfall continues to increase across the state during the peak of the rainy season.
Okay News reports that the government warned that blocked drainage channels and poor waste disposal remain major causes of flooding, urging residents to stop dumping refuse into gutters, streams, rivers, and other waterways.
In a public service announcement signed by Dr. Malachy Uchenna Agbo, the Commissioner for Information and Communication, the government called on households, landlords, business owners, and community leaders to keep their surroundings clean and ensure that drainage systems remain free of waste and other obstructions.
The government also advised people living in flood-prone communities to closely monitor weather updates and relocate to safer areas whenever necessary to avoid loss of lives and property.
Residents were further warned against walking, swimming, or driving through floodwaters, noting that the depth and strength of floodwaters are often difficult to determine and could pose serious risks.
The state government stressed that flood prevention is a collective responsibility, adding that maintaining clean surroundings and ensuring the free flow of drainage channels would help reduce flooding and protect communities throughout the rainy season.
The statement concluded by calling for public cooperation in safeguarding lives, property, and public infrastructure as rainfall intensifies across Enugu State.
