Benin, Nigeria – Former Edo State Commissioner for Education, Emmanuel Paddy Iyamu, has formally declared his intention to contest for a seat in the House of Representatives, just days after stepping down from his position in the state government. Iyamu is seeking to represent Oredo Federal Constituency, signaling his transition from an executive role into elective politics.
Okay News reports that his declaration took place at the All Progressives Congress (APC) Secretariat in Oredo Local Government Area, where he was received by party leaders and supporters. Among those present were key figures within the party structure, reflecting growing political backing for his ambition as the election season begins to gather momentum.
Speaking during the event, Iyamu dismissed claims that he was a recent entrant into the party, insisting that he has been an active member since 2016. He highlighted his contributions to the party’s success over the years, including grassroots mobilization efforts and financial support for youth leaders during previous election cycles. According to him, his political journey has been defined by loyalty, service, and commitment to party ideals.
The former commissioner also pointed to his track record in community development, particularly his empowerment programmes targeted at women and youths across the constituency. He noted that since 2019, he has sustained various initiatives aimed at supporting small businesses and improving livelihoods, adding that these efforts have strengthened his connection with the people at the grassroots level.
Confident about his chances, Iyamu stated that the turnout at his declaration event reflects public trust in his leadership. He maintained that if given the mandate, he would deliver greater development to the constituency, building on the progress already recorded during his time in public office.
Party leaders at the event urged unity among members, stressing the need to avoid internal divisions as preparations for the elections intensify. They described Iyamu as a loyal party man and called on supporters to work collectively to ensure success at the polls.
