Oslo, Norway – Former Norwegian Prime Minister Thorbjørn Jagland has reportedly been hospitalized after a suicide attempt, days after being charged with gross corruption linked to his relationship with late financier Jeffrey Epstein.
According to Norwegian outlet iNyheter, Jagland is in critical condition. The specific medical facility treating the 75-year-old statesman has not been disclosed.
Jagland, one of Norway’s most prominent political figures, previously served as prime minister and as Secretary General of the Council of Europe. He also chaired the Norwegian Nobel Committee from 2009 to 2015 and remained a member until 2020.
The reported corruption charges are said to be linked to revelations from recently released Epstein-related files by the US Justice Department. Norwegian broadcaster NRK reported that police raided several of Jagland’s homes this month over alleged links to Epstein and aggravated corruption. The allegations reportedly involve claims of trips and luxury stays offered to the former prime minister.
The disclosure of Jagland’s hospitalization has sparked debate in Norway over media transparency. iNyheter reported that some Norwegian media outlets had reached an understanding with Jagland’s lawyer not to cover the incident, citing its sensitive nature. However, the publication argued that Jagland’s public profile and the seriousness of the charges justified reporting the development.
