Former Somali President Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed, popularly known as Farmaajo, has strongly condemned Israel’s decision to recognise Somaliland as an independent and sovereign state, describing the move as a clear violation of international law and Somalia’s territorial integrity.
In a statement shared on X on Friday, December 26, 2025, Farmaajo insisted that Somaliland remains an integral part of Somalia and warned that recognising any part of the country undermines its sovereignty.
Farmaajo said international law obliges Israel to respect Somalia’s unity and borders, stressing that the Somali people are firmly united in defending their sovereignty.
His reaction follows Israel’s declaration recognising Somaliland, which was jointly signed by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar, and Somaliland President Dr Abdirahman Mohamed Abdallah.
As earlier gathered by Okay News, Netanyahu said the recognition was inspired by the Abraham Accords and announced plans to expand Israel’s cooperation with Somaliland in agriculture, health, technology, and the economy.
The move has triggered sharp debate globally, especially as Israel continues to withhold recognition of Palestine, with critics arguing that the Somaliland decision raises serious questions about consistency in Israel’s approach to sovereignty and self-determination.
