Several powerful explosions rocked Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv, early Saturday as authorities warned of an incoming missile and drone attack.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed air defence systems were active and urged residents to remain in shelters, while Ukraine’s air force issued a nationwide alert over aerial threats moving across multiple regions.
AFP journalists in the city heard loud blasts and saw bright flashes lighting up the skyline, as Kyiv’s regional military administration later confirmed air defences were responding to an approaching drone.
The attacks come amid intensified hostilities, with Ukraine continuing to face sustained aerial assaults since Russia’s invasion began in 2022.
The developments follow reports that President Volodymyr Zelensky is expected to meet US President Donald Trump in Florida on Sunday to discuss a proposed plan to end the war. Okay News reports that the plan, which has drawn criticism from Russia, could freeze fighting along current front lines and introduce demilitarised buffer zones in parts of eastern Ukraine.
