The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has provided additional explanations following inquiries from Nigerians regarding the relocation of its corporate headquarters from Abuja to Lagos.
The directive for the relocation was issued by Mr. Festus Keyamo, the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, who emphasized the need for cost-effective measures and strategic considerations.
In response to public queries, FAAN highlighted the following key points:
- Return to Lagos: Those affected by the decision to move the headquarters to Abuja have returned to Lagos as there was insufficient office space in Abuja. The initial decision to relocate to Abuja was deemed impractical.
- Cost Savings: Returning to Lagos prevents the need to pay Duty Tour Allowance (DTA) for staff technically working out of station in Abuja. The Minister aims to curb unnecessary expenses and ensure responsible use of public resources.
- Operational Focus: Over 60% of FAAN’s activities, given the substantial passenger volume, are centered in Lagos. The decision aligns with operational realities and prevents the waste of public funds on renting office space in Abuja.
- Concessionaire Plans: The Minister plans to engage concessionaires to construct modern offices in both Lagos and Abuja. Until then, FAAN will manage its existing building in Lagos, capable of accommodating all directors and senior officials.
- Full Operations in Abuja: Despite the relocation of the corporate headquarters, Abuja continues to host full operational offices. The move does not impact the day-to-day activities of FAAN in the capital.
- Future Decision: A final decision on the permanent headquarters location will be made in the future, considering the completion of new corporate buildings in both Lagos and Abuja.
