As the Eid-el-Kabir celebrations approach this weekend, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has issued a strong warning against bribery and extortion at airports across the country.

The agency also assured travellers of a seamless travel experience during the festive period.

In a statement issued by Mrs. Obiageli Orah, Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, FAAN highlighted the measures taken to upgrade security apparatus to ensure the safety of lives and properties at airports nationwide.

Orah encouraged travellers to arrive at the airport early to avoid missing their flights and to reduce the rush commonly associated with festive seasons.

“FAAN assures Nigerians of very seamless travel through our airports this Salah festive season, as the Authority has consistently taken measures to upgrade her security apparatus to ensure safety of life and property of the travelling public. FAAN, therefore, encourages all travellers to be at the airport early enough in order not to miss their flights as well as reduce rush,” the statement reads.

The authority advised international travellers to arrive at the airport three hours before departure, while local travellers should be there two hours prior to their flight schedules. It also emphasized the importance of personal luggage management and vigilance during the screening process.

“Ensure that you pack your luggage yourself. Do not leave your luggage unattended. FAAN has expanded the screening area in order to give passengers a better flying experience. Keep an eye on your valuables while passing through screening. Ensure that you park your vehicle properly at the car park to avoid it being towed,” Orah advised.

FAAN also warned against engaging the services of touts and reiterated its commitment to punishing staff or government agency personnel found guilty of extortion.

“Do not engage the services of touts. The Managing Director of FAAN, Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, at a recent event had sent out a severe warning to staff as well as all government agencies that operate at our airports that FAAN will ensure that whoever is culpable is punished,” Orah noted.

Travellers were urged not to give bribes or encourage extortion and to respect regulations regarding the carriage of prohibited articles, liquids, and gels. FAAN also reminded passengers of the availability of information desks at all airports to assist them.

“Do not give bribes or encourage extortion. Respect rules and regulations in respect of carriage of prohibited articles, liquids, and gel. We have information desks at all our airports to assist you. Please make use of them,” the statement concluded.
